Sanitization

The corona virus pandemic has scared people so much that they are fearing to touch surfaces, objects and every little thing they handle around them. Sanitizers and disinfectant sprays have gained huge demand. In this high intensity situation, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur has come up with a new Ultraviolet (UV) device named ‘SHUDH’ that can disinfect the room in just 15 minutes.

SHUDH or Smartphone operated Handy Ultraviolet Disinfection Helper has six UV lights of 15 watts each that can be individually monitored form a distance. It has been prepared jointly by IIT Imagine Lab’s In-charge Jeram Kumar, Amandeep Singh and Shivam Sachan.

Singh said that amidst the pandemic, people were scared to touch different objects due to the fear of infections. At the same time, liquid disinfection has yielded quite negative results. In such a situation, the Institute had decided to develop a device that could keep infections at bay.

Running of the device

The device can be run with Bluetooth technology. It has six lights which can be rotated up to 360 degrees. The lights can be adjusted to the size of the room. If the room is large, more lights can be used. This will help in disinfecting the room in 15 minutes. It can also be used to prevent infections in hospitals, malls, offices and schools.

Kumar stated that by installing an Android application, one can remotely control the on off, speed and location of the product using the available smartphone. The net has six 15 watt UV lights that can be individually controlled remotely. Initial testing has proved that in its complete operation, the device can disinfect a 10 square ft room in about 15 minutes.

After the beginning of the corona era, sanitation tunneling has started in most offices, factories and establishments. Sanitized tunnels have been installed at the doors of companies including police stations, offices. In such a situation, people would get sanitized but there is still a risk of virus entering the room. This disinfection system will reduce the risk.

While everyone is searching for a vaccine that can contain the spread, the professors of IIT Kanpur have come up with a great short term solution. The vaccine may take months to be developed but this is certainly a necessary invention by them. Disinfecting a room was a tedious task before this but we hope that with this UV device we will get the desired results in a span of mere 15 minutes. They have also proved that how we all are united together fighting to achieve peace.
